About the Artwork

Embers of Expression is an original contemporary mixed-media paper artwork by Indian artist Apurva Singh, exploring the intensity of human expression, emotion and the fragmented experiences of contemporary life.

The composition unfolds through a vibrant dialogue of orange, vermilion, yellow, lavender, violet, pink, white and earthy tones. These colours are layered across the paper in broad translucent passages, energetic marks and fragmented shapes, creating a surface that feels both spontaneous and deeply constructed.

At the centre of the composition, concentrated areas of red, orange and ochre create a powerful visual energy—like embers glowing beneath a complex surface. Around this central intensity, loosely defined forms and expressive linear marks appear to emerge and dissolve, suggesting people, gestures, interactions and emotional states without becoming literal representations.

One of the distinctive elements of the work is the incorporation of found printed paper and fragments of text. These fragments become part of the visual vocabulary, bringing traces of everyday life, media and contemporary culture into the abstract composition. Hand-drawn lines move freely across the surface, connecting painted areas with the collaged elements and creating a sense of continuous movement.

The contrast between the densely worked central passages and the lighter, quieter areas around them creates a rhythm of tension and release. The viewer's eye moves repeatedly between colour, line, texture and partially recognisable forms, allowing different interpretations to emerge.

Rather than telling a fixed story, Embers of Expression captures a state of emotional intensity and visual memory. It reflects how experiences accumulate within us—through conversations, relationships, images, information and fleeting moments—and are gradually transformed into personal memories and expressions.

Through its combination of abstract painting, collage, drawing and mixed-media paper techniques, the work occupies a space between abstraction and suggestion, inviting the viewer to discover their own narrative within its layered surface.
