About the Artwork
This original contemporary mixed-media artwork on paper by Indian artist Apurva Singh explores the relationship between memory, perception and the constantly changing character of urban life.
The composition is built around a restrained and atmospheric palette of dusty pink, warm beige, soft grey, white and muted coral. Large translucent areas of colour create a spacious, almost dreamlike environment, while concentrated passages of intricate drawing and layered forms bring movement and complexity to the surface.
At the centre of the composition, fragmented forms gather into a dense visual structure. Architectural suggestions, abstract shapes and delicate linear gestures overlap one another, creating an impression of a city or environment perceived through memory rather than observed literally.
The expressive black and grey lines are particularly important to the work. They move freely across the painted areas, sometimes defining forms and at other times deliberately escaping them. This creates a tension between structure and spontaneity, suggesting the way our perception of places and experiences is never completely fixed.
Subtle coral and pink passages introduce warmth into the predominantly neutral composition. These accents appear almost like fragments of remembered images, standing out briefly before becoming absorbed into the surrounding layers.
The quieter areas of the artwork create a sense of pause and openness, allowing the viewer to move visually toward the more densely constructed central passages. This contrast between silence and activity, openness and density gives the painting its rhythm.
Rather than depicting a specific city or scene, the work presents an abstract landscape of perception—a place formed from fragments of architecture, movement, memory and human experience.
The layered surface suggests how memories are accumulated over time: some remain clear, while others become faint, fragmented or partially concealed beneath newer experiences.
Through the combination of mixed-media layering, expressive drawing, translucent colour and fragmented abstraction, Apurva Singh creates a contemplative work that invites viewers to find their own sense of place and meaning within the composition.
